Did you know that Bulgaria is one of the most affordable places to ski or snowboard in Europe? As a student, my friends and I took advantage of this and booked trips to Borovets and Bansko. However, planning a ski holiday involves many considerations, such as travel, accommodation, lift passes, ski hire or carriage, ski school lessons, and apres-ski expenses. I decided to investigate how budget-friendly a snowboard holiday in Bulgaria is compared to other European destinations.

FLIGHTS

Accessing the ski resorts in Bulgaria is easiest from Sofia the countries captial. Getting to Sofia during the winter ski season from the UK is relatively easy and cost-effective with many airlines operating seasonal routes. These direct routes are available from various UK airports to Sofia, such as Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet, with prices ranging from around £30-£80 depending on the time of booking and availability. You may have to consider additional baggage costs if travelling with your own skis or snowboard. However, with Bulgaria being a beginner friendly ski and snowboard destination it is likely that you will be hiring equipment when in resort.

TRANSFERS

Once you arrive at Sofia airport, the most convenient way to travel onwards to Bansko is by bus or private transfer, which takes around 2-3 hours and costs around €10-€15 per person. Alternatively, you can also rent a car and drive to Bansko, which takes around 2.5 hours and costs around €50-€70 per day. Overall, travelling from the UK to Bansko during the winter ski season is a great value-for-money option.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation across Bansko is varied with a range of accommodation options, from budget hostels to luxury hotels. A comfortable mid-range hotel with breakfast can cost around £20-£30 per person per night, way less than the comparable accommodation in the French or Swiss Alps. Alternatively, you could opt for an apartment or chalet, which can offer more space and flexibility. A two-bedroom apartment can cost around £200-£300 per week, which works out to be around £20-£30 per person per night. With plenty of accommodation to suit a range of budgets finding a place to sleep in Bankso doesn’t need to break the bank.

SKI PASSES

One of the main expenses of a snowboarding holiday is the ski pass. Bansko offers some of the cheapest ski passes in Europe, with a six-day pass costing around £130 per person. This pass gives you access to 70 km of pistes, 16 lifts and a snow park.

LESSONS

If you are a beginner or looking to improve your snowboarding skills, you may want to consider taking lessons. Bansko has several ski schools that offer group and private lessons. Group lessons cost around £90 for six days, while private lessons start from around £30 per hour.

FOOD

Bulgaria is known for its delicious and affordable cuisine. In Bansko, you can expect to pay around £5-£10 for a meal in a local restaurant. If you are on a tight budget, there are also plenty of fast food options and supermarkets where you can buy food for a fraction of the price.

OVERALL BREAKDOWN

To summarise, here is a breakdown of the cost of a snowboard holiday to Bansko:

Flights: £50 Accommodation: £20-£30 per person per night Ski pass: £130 Lessons: £90 for group lessons, £30 per hour for private lessons Food: £5-£10 per meal

Assuming a seven-night stay with six days of skiing and group lessons, the total cost for a snowboard holiday to Bansko would be around £450-£550 per person. Of course, these prices are subject to change depending on the time of year, the level of accommodation you choose and other factors, but they give you a good idea of how cheap a snowboard holiday to Bulgaria can be.

In conclusion, if you are looking for an affordable snowboarding holiday that offers great slopes, stunning scenery and delicious food, Bulgaria is a great option. Bansko in particular is a charming resort that caters to snowboarders of all levels, and with prices this low, you can enjoy a fantastic winter holiday without breaking the bank
